Latest company news about Tat Group will make iphones in India after acquiring Wistron's business.

On the 27th local time, Rajiv Chandrasekhar, Minister of State of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of India, announced on the social platform "X" that Tat Group of India took over the Indian business of Wistron, an important supplier of iphones, and Tat will start producing Apple phones for the domestic and global markets in two and a half years. The group will also become India's first local iPhone maker. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visionary Production-linked Incentive (PLI) program has propelled India to become a major hub for trusted smartphone manufacturing and exports," Chandrasekhar said. Earlier in the day, Wistron announced that its board of directors had approved the sale of its plant in Karnataka, India, to Tat for a tentative transaction price of $125 million. The transaction will seek regulatory approval after the parties have confirmed and signed the relevant agreements. Public information shows that Wistron's factory is located 50 kilometers east of Bangalore, the "Silicon Valley of India", the capital of Karnataka, with an area of more than 200,000 square meters. The factory has eight iPhone production lines, tens of thousands of employees, including thousands of engineers, and is an important part of Apple's global industrial chain. Wistron was also the first company to manufacture iphones in India and has been operating in the country for more than 15 years, producing models such as the iPhone SE for Apple Inc. As for the reason for Wistron's withdrawal from India, the United States Quartz network previously reported that Wistron had encountered many controversial treatments in India. On December 12, 2020, Wistron's Indian factory was smashed. In 2020, its Bengaluru factory suffered a mass protest by workers. The Indian government subsequently removed Wistron from the list of approved producers, and Wistron was forced to change its labor policies. Wistron has also been targeted by Indian authorities over environmental concerns. India's Karnataka state Pollution Control Board hit the company in 2019 for violating environmental laws by dumping untreated waste that polluted local groundwater. In addition, the landing of Apple's industrial chain also needs to consider complex factors.
